Over 200,000 people play ping pong in the UK. Why? Because it’s good fun!
You could join a league or find a competitive ping pong event. But, in truth, you don’t need to leave the comfort of your own home to enjoy the sport. Nothing adds an element of fun and competition to your recreation room like a ping pong table.
In considering one, ping pong table dimensions are important. A standard table takes up a lot of room on its own. Then, you’ll need to look at space for players, too.
Do you think you have the space to accommodate one? Here’s how to find out.
Ping Pong Table Dimensions and Fit
Looking to add a ping pong table to your home? You’ll need to make sure it fits! Here’s what you should know before you buy.
A standard table is 9 feet long and 5 feet wide. This is a total of 45 square feet. That’s a decent chunk of your room space, but now you need to add room for players.
The least amount of space you need all around the table for players is 5 feet. So if you add that amount to your tablespace, you’ll need a required 70 square feet. This is only for players and table.
You can get smaller, more compact tables for recreational play. Yet, those are not good for people who want to play competition style. People who compete will want to stick with the standard size.
Recreational ping pong play takes up a lot less space than competitive play. Basic players can work with 5 feet. But, if you have any experience or skill, you’ll need more.
Here’s a general guideline for the least amount of play area behind the table. It’s based on skills and experience in playing ping pong.
- Basic Player – 5 feet
- Intermediate Player – 8 feet
- Advanced Player – 12 feet
Now, consider side to side playing room for your players, as well. Start with 5 feet of extra space on the sides of your table. Expect to add 3 to 4 more feet for intermediate and advanced players.
Plan For Your Audience
What fun is ping pong if you can’t have an audience? Add in some more space for people to watch!
Consider seating for them. Pub style tables with stools give your audience a great view. Counter height benches allow for more people to watch at a time.
Keep safety in mind. Make sure there’s some distance between your audience and your players. You’ll want to add about 3 or 4 feet to your side and back playing areas to make sure your audience isn’t in the way.
If you’re getting a table with intentions to train for competition, you’ll need more room. Calculate your ping pong table dimensions with space for equipment, robotics, and servers. This could be an extra 5 or 6 feet.
